To Help BMX Apple Valley looking into bikes at skate park RACHEL BYRD November 14, 2007 - 1:19PM APPLE VALLEY — A group of BMX bike riders who have been protesting the exclusion of bikes at the James Woody skate park may soon get some answers from the Town Council. Mayor Rick Roelle asked interim Town Manager Jim Cox on Tuesday night to look into the insurance costs and suggested that the issue be put on a future agenda. “We’ve been dealing with this for three years,” Roelle said. A proposed solution has been to allow bikes in the park on odd days and skaters on even days. “If the insurance company definitely will not cover it, or if this odd, even system could work, we could come to some compromise,” Roelle said. The council looked at the possibility of allowing bikes about a year ago and determined that the insurance would not cover the project without retrofitting, which would cost about $130,000, said Mayor Pro Tem Timothy Jasper. The council has paid $1.5 million to the park district out of the general fund, and there are many demands on the district. William Furmage has been trying to persuade the town to allow bicycles in the park for about three years. He has 150 signatures from the three protests he has organized in the past few weeks. “Apple Valley youth just want to enjoy the pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness with the sport of their choice,” Furmage told the council at their Tuesday night meeting. Furmage said that using retrofitting as an excuse is the council’s “stall tactic,” and he plans on organizing more protests.
