For the heck of it (and because it's been too hot to ride for two weeks since I started working this new job thing) I've decided to make a list of musical artists/performers that have been, pardon the pun, instrumental in my own musical development... which includes listening, playing, and performing. Some may make more than one list.
For bass:
- Victor Wooten
- Les Claypool
- Paul McCartney
- Chuck Rainey
- Will Lee
- Anthony Wellington
- Billy Gould
- Geddy Lee
- Cliff Burton (no matter how much I want to, can't deny)
- Oteil Burbridge
- Steve Bailey
- Jaco Pastorius
- Marcus Miller
- James Jamerson
- Bootsy Collins
- Krist Nov... nope, can't say it with a straight face. Scratch that one.
- Rex. If you don't know who this is, you don't need to.
- Stu Hamm
- Mike Gordon
Vocals:
- Paul McCartney
- Chris Cornell
- Ike... uh... Ike... the guy who sang for Frank Zappa on Joe's Garage.
- John Lennon
- Jerry Cantrell and/or Layne Staley
- George Harrison
- Mike Patton before he completely flaked out
- Paul Carrack
- Paul Rodgers
- Tommy Shaw
- Phil Anselmo... not so much now, but bitd
- Victor Wooten
- Trey Anastasio/Mike Gordon/Page Whatshisname
General Favorite artists (some should be obvious:
-The Beatles (includes all solo and Beatle-related groups, such as Wings and, to a lesser degree, the Traveling Wilburys)
- Victor Wooten
- Bela Fleck And The Flecktones (deserves their own listing)
- The John Scofield Band
- Chris Cornell (includes solo, Soundgarden, and Audioslave... also, Temple of the Dog)
- Alice In Chains
- Phish
- Primus (anything Les Claypoolitous is fine)
- Frank Zappa (most of the time)
And, just to let you know, I will always have Slayer's Reign In blood on CD.
Next up, I post my opinion on who the ten best guitar players of all time are. Just because I want to post something.
