Hey DrJosh
Your so right about this big surge of 30 plus riders getting back on there bikes. Its really cool to be apart of the new wave of riding. I am sure there is some one that could suggest a good bike for you to get. I am riding a We the people sinus. Its strickly a flatland bike. Again welcome to the message board. Feel free to post message and make friends and post about your progression. Mark

Welcome aboard DrJosh!
I rode street/flat back in the late 80's to early 90's, then stopped for a long time, maybe 12 or 13 years. I just got back into it myself (last September) and it's been great. I had the same dilemma with picking a bike being that the two disciplines have now sort of split and it's hard to find the ideal all-purpose bike. I ended up getting a WeThePeople Nova, which is a street bike, then threw on, over time, an extra set of pegs, a freecoaster wheel, an old school set of Peregrine bars, and an Odyssey minimum offset flatland fork. So, I ended up with a hybrid of sorts. It's heavier than a "normal" flatland bike, but it will probably withstand a bit more abuse when I start doing more heavy-duty street.
Anyway, that's what I did, but I also considered getting the longest flatland frame, something close to 20" tt, and build my own, but I wanted to start riding right away, so I got that complete bike.
Hope that helps and, again, welcome aboard!

Hey guys, I'm Keith, I'm 37 and I'm from the land down under. I've just signed up after watching Marks "my first decade" vid (brings back memories of doing the same thing myself) as well as a few others. I used to ride flatland way back in the mid/late 80's and up to the mid 90's and stopped for a fair while until around '99/2000 when I bought a '96 Haro Shredder which I still have. Then I stopped again not long after. I was always into flatland cos I wasn't really that good at ramps or street so much and I just liked flatland a lot better. After watchin some of the vids and reading the posts here I'm even more encouraged to buy a decent flatland bike and get started at it again. I did have an "88 Haro Master with GT Performer bars that made it pretty good for no hander front yards, and I have to say it was easily my favourite bike ever, pitty it got nicked . After that I got a Hutch trickstar II but I never quite had the confidence in it that I did with the Master. Before I stopped last time I was trying double whiplashes and ended up getting one or two, actually they where more like whiplash to tailwhip, by the time I'd finished the second one the bike was stopped from using the front brake too much. So anyway, I'm in the process of researching the newer makes and models of bikes, pitty the KHE Equilibrium's so expensive, $2,000 AUD. I'm having a look at some catalouges on Tuesday but any advice on what might be ideal would be appreciated. I'm really after a complete flatland bike with all the goods that won't break the bank. BTW, I'm around 6 feet tall and about 175 kg's if that's any help. Cheers, Keith

Welcome aboard Keith!! I am sure there are a few riders here that can give some good recomendations on what kind of bike to get. I am riding a WTP sinus. If I had enough money I would have got the pro instead of the AM but I am very happy with what I got. It made all the differance in the world. Well be seeing you on the message board!!!
Keep on Riding!!

Well, guess I'll introduce myself too(because I'm too lazy to start work just yet..hehe). First off, a big thanks to Mark for taking his time and funds to set up a website for us old and young guys who still love to ride their bikes. I also rode in the mid 80s to early 90s. For me, it was all flatland but towards the end, I tried some street but never really stuck with me. The most I could do were disasters and fence rides(which were actually a lot of fun). Also, back then, my bike was prone to breaking parts and I couldn't afford to replace them so street wasn't really an option for me if I wanted to stay on my bike. But back to the subject.
During my years when I didn't ride, I still kept my bike around. Maybe once or twice a year, I'll pull it out for 30 minutes and do my old stuff. I tried park and vert early 2000 but that ended a little over a year after doing a faceplant on the vert ramp leaving me with memory loss, stitches, and a $2000 medical bill. UGH!!
It wasn't till two years ago did I meet some guy at my old apartment who was still keeping up with the BMX world. He saw me do a decade and approached me. He told me he used to ride so we both decided to ride again. He is also the person who introduced me to pedalbmx.com. After I started browsing that did my love of riding come back. Not to mention attending my first Hollywood Jam at Zuma beach, CA where I saw all types of riders, young and old. I was convinced that being old was an attitude and that kind of attitude wasn't going to keep me from riding again. My current ride back then was a Haro Mirra...same bike I used for vert. But after riding a few people's new school bikes, I was convinced I needed a flat specific bike. So I headed to flatlandfuel and spent a small fortune on a new bike. It's been the best purchase I've made in recent years...hehe!
All I know is, the passion for riding is back and possibly even greater than it was before. Oh...btw, my name is Rey. LOL!

I am Sandy Crawford(male). I am 33 and live in Chattanooga, TN. Back in the day I was in a suburb of Atlanta, GA. I competed many times in the southeast and 4 times in the old AFA. I placed 5th in the 14X class in January of 1988 and 3rd in the 15X class in September of 1988 both in flatland. Another member here jwright and I pushed each other throughout most of 1988. In the southeast comps he and I switched out placing 1 and 2 most of the time.
I stopped around 1991 or 1992. And didnt get back on a bike till 2 weeks ago. I bought an Eastern Sequence. I can do most scuffing stuff and some rolling stuff like hang 5s and whiplashes. It feels good to ride again, now I am working on getting that "feel" back on my bike, the feel where the bike is almost a body part.
This website, Vbmx, Mark, Jamie Wright, Wulfran....are all my inspiration to ride again and to progress. Thanks.
I agree with Rey, the passion is back. I rode last night and only stopped because it got dark and I needed to get back to my family.
I will ride again tonight.

Well here we are. I've been lurking around on the site here for a few weeks and I gotta tell ya, I'm missin' the good old days. I managed to get ahold of an old riding buddy of mine and get a frame from him. Now I've finally built up an old school bmx'er. I'ts the same bike I used to ride back in the day. It's a skyway T/A with redline forks, black widow 3 piece cranks, some new wheels, new haro bars, and I went ahead and stuck some pegs all the way around it and even put a couple brakes on it. I never used to ride with brakes. Last time I ever really rode and was comfortable with it was about 12 years ago, so it's like starting all over for me. I live in South Texas in a small town called Beeville. I travel a ton for a living driving a truck for the Professional Bull Riders, so I thought it was a great idea to go ahead and just throw my bike in the truck and haul it with me. Now the real dilemma. I gotta get back to where I'm comfortable on a bike again. Just last night I pulled it out for a few minutes and it felt really foreign to me. HELP! I never did a lot of flatland, but I did ride quite a bit of street. I used to be able to lay a 55 gallon drum on it's side and bunny hop over it. Rock walks were easy, tailwhips, endos, all that fun stuff. Now I can't even get a peg wheelie down. My GOD where did my skills go?! HAHA....anyways, good to meet all of ya, By the way, my name's Dan.

Hey Dan!
Welcome aboard. I know what you mean. I also stopped for 12 or so years and when I finally got a bike again, I couldn't even bunnyhop 6 inches, let alone a 55gal drum (I used to BITD). It just takes time and pain to get it back. I think my arms and shoulders were sore for a couple of months when I started again. Pretty much, yeah, you have to relearn everything, but this time around it might be a shorter time.
Anyway, welcome again and hope you get to put some riding time in.
