RIDE BMX MAGAZINE FEB 2003 ISSUE STORY TITLE: THE VOICE OF APATHY On Saturday, september 28, nearly 30 riders gathered at the federal building in los angeles for a spausa-organized protest against the discrimination of bikes in public skateparks in the los angeles area. Los angeles is one of the largest cities in the united states, and the area holds the densest population of bike riders in the world. Yet only 30 riders showed up throughout the day-not at once, mind you, but over the course of a four-hour protest. If you were to go through ride's reader mail at any given moment, you'd find donzens of letters from riders complaining that bikes aren't allowed in public skateparks. The topic is a regular subject of debate on BMX message boards across america. Yet when something is organized to protest against this discriminatory practice, few show their support. This, my friends is called apathy, otherwise known as a lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal, AKA indifference. In a democratic society, the voice of the people matters. Yet when that voice never speaks, it will never have bearing upon society. There are several ways you can become involved in the fight against bicycle discrimination in public skateparks and make your voice heard. The easiest way to begin is by visiting www.spausa.org and www.bmxriders.org both web sites are filled with all the information you need to appeal to your local city council as well as announcements regarding local actions that you can participate in.There's also a new project being started called access BMX. Be on the lookout for it; We're really excited about it and we hope it will have a lot of influence. Whether you choose to get involved or not is up to you, but if your dicision is apathy, then you forfeit your right to a voice, you forfeit your right to complain, and in the end, you forfeit your right to ride. I understand that it is easier to complain than to actually do someyhing to change that which you complain about. But if BMX matters to you, and having a place to ride matters to you, then supporting actions that speak out against discrimination should matter to you. -SCOT Side note reads Although the protest was published here in the pages of ride and BMXonline, as well as on flyers posted at skateparks around the area, there was an extremely small turnout for an anti-discrimination protest at the federal building in Los angeles. An interesting sidenote is that scot broke the law by shooting this photo and FBI agents actually came out and told him not to shoot photos anymore.
