I'm not sure if too many of the people here heard anything about the situation I've been in for a while, since I did my venting at VBMX originally (haven't been there in weeks). So I'll toss in a short version of it real quick before I get to the "good" part.
Back in February, I left the job I was working in Raleigh, NC (had been working there for five years) and drove across the country to BFE Rough And Ready, California, ostensibly to take on a business venture with one of my older brothers involving music publishing (creating a catalog of songs for sale) and this interesting yet completely boring/kinda shady real estate thing. Neither business ended up happening at all, but my brother was in the position of having agreed to pay me a salary... I'd degenerated into basically his yard boy. Eventually, his wife cut off all of his and my funds, effectively killing every deal previously made, including my entire source of income (out of the blue, no notice). I started looking for jobs, but I didn't get enough notice to find one before I went broke again. Oh, did I mention I've been living in his motor home with no AC or running water? I got to be, get this, 113 degrees in this thing. My only solace is that I'm still able to access their network and thus stay on the internet.
So, about a month ago, I found a job working for the state parks. No, wait... exactly a month ago to the day. Haven't missed a day, or even an hour. First paycheck just covered my car payment.
The good news is that this next check, due any day now, is going to get me into an apartment in Grass Valley. It's a fait accompli, since I signed one of those "intent to rent" forms. One of the guys I work with was in a very similar situation regarding housing, so we pooled our resources, made a couple calls, and looked at the one in the right place first. It's not perfect, but it's priced right and has a laundromatical-type facility in the building, as well as having, say, running water, and a working refrigerator. Those two things have become very important to me in the last few months.
So... stoked, I am. I have a nice, reasonably secure job that kinda fun in being hard work... I helped build a fence, I helped with the construction of a big rock handicap-beach-access thing that included a smidgen of my previous experiences in engineering... I'm learning how to operate a chainsaw, which is just plain fun... At the end of this month, I get three days of freakin' firefighting training, and most likely some hazmat training to go along with it. I get to spend every day in various state parks in the Sierra-Nevada mountains and/or the foothils of them. I've seen two bald eagles in the last two days.
And I've got an apartment that's located in a town, in biking distance to work, and very near possible flatland spots that I've been scoping out on various trips through town.
I'm still not completely out of the woods yet, financially speaking, but I'm getting there. Everything outstanding should be paid off soon and the freshness should commence relatively shortly.
I've even got some musical stuff to think about. Feeling optimistic for once. Nice.
