BMX riders protest at skate park
RACHEL BYRD November 7, 2007 - 9:44AM APPLE VALLEY — About 20 people protested the exclusion of bikes at the James Woody skate park Tuesday afternoon.
William Furmage has been trying to persuade the town to allow bicycles in the park for about three years and called on people who had signed his petition to protest.
The council looked in to the possibility of allowing bikes about a year ago and determined that the skate park was not built for use by BMX bikes, said town spokeswoman Kathie Martin.
This is a safety issue, and a change in policy is not being considered, Martin said.
“The park is called the community center, and it’s excluding members of the community,” Furmage said.
Protesters carried signs that said ‘Apple Valley Town Council: Allow Bikes Now,’ ‘Equal Rights for Bikes,’ and ‘BMX Is Not A Crime.’
Furmage said that a lot of people honked in support, and he plans to organize more protests, possibly in front of Town Hall.
